Celebrating its tenth year, Securi-Tay, held at Abertay University in the UK, is the largest student-run Information Security conference in Europe. It provides a unique experience to its attendees and sponsors, like ourselves, to chat and network with some of the greatest up and coming talent within the Infosec Community.

Part of Cyber Scotland Week, our sponsorship at Securi-Tay also marked the official launch of our new Graduate Programme, offering several individuals a place on our new innovative programme, commencing September 2022.

SecuriTayX

Helping develop the next generation.

It was a busy start to the morning for Quorum Cyber with our CEO & Founder, Federico Charosky kicking off the day with the opening keynote on ‘The Art of Fighting Bullies’ – a talk about our history, about the things we got right, and the things we got wrong to get to here, and what we believe people can do to have a long-lasting positive impact in a problem that – sometimes – feels too big to tackle.

The day then split across three separate tracks, with talks from both seasoned professions and first-time speakers including Quorum Cyber’s Graduate Apprentice, Elizabeth Momola, session on ‘Microsoft Sentinel, Log Analytics and Kusto Query Language- What a Security Analyst does on a daily basis’ and our Lead Penetration Tester, Mark Rose, on the topic of ‘Hacking 9-5; A Day in the Life of… ‘

This was both Elizabeth and Mark’s first time presenting at an in-person conference, and we can safely say they aced it!

With the event in full flow, there was also plenty of opportunities throughout the day to head over to our stand and speak to our team. Our newly promoted SOC Manager, Danny Henderson, Head of Offensive Security, Miguel Marques, Talent Manager, Bill Thomson, Cyber Security Analyst, Donnan Mollan and our Senior Cyber Security Analyst, Ryan Standbridge were ready to answer any questions and, of course, give out plenty of swag bags!

It was an awesome day at SecuriTayX – we loved supporting and networking with the next wave of cyber talent and look forward to seeing where their journeys take them.

Bill Thomson, Talent Manager

I had a great day out in Dundee with the team, meeting and chatting to the next generation of cyber talent. I was bowled over by the general enthusiasm for all things security and massively encouraged by the level of interest in our new graduate programme.

All of the undergraduates I talked to seemed genuinely excited about what we are planning. No one else seems to be offering anything close to the reach of our new programme, where our graduates will get the opportunity to spend time in our SOC, our offensive team, IR, and advisory, come out with a sack load of industry-recognised accreditations and get a real feel for what areas in security they enjoy most and fit best. The highlight of the day for me was the undergrad who was so keen he asked if he could call me in a couple of days to see how his application was progressing, but assured me he wouldn’t call me at “3.00am or anything like that”, which was much appreciated!

Miguel Marques, Head of Offensive Security

Another year, another SecuriTay! This has been my 6th or 7th visit to SecuriTay even since I moved to Scotland in 2013. I’ve been there in multiple capacities: as a normal attendee, as a speaker and this year, us being sponsors, as a “booth person”.

Every time it feels like a breath of fresh air. I usually say it is my favourite Scottish conference and I’m never disappointed with the quality of the talks and how everything is organised.

This year, being in the booth, I didn’t manage to catch as many talks as I would have hoped but I did watch “Practicing Safe Sex(t)” by Tia Cotton, our own Elizabeth Momola’s career path “Life in the SOC” and “Delusions of Operational Security” by Michael Jack.

What a coincidence that the last SecuriTay had been right before the whole COVID situation broke loose in the UK and it is only fitting we’re slowly recovering and coming back there. See you next year!

Danny Henderson, SOC Manager

I had a great experience at Securi-TayX, representing Quorum Cyber at our company stand! I loved hearing students’ ambitions and interests in cyber security, and I know from first-hand experience how valuable these talks are at that stage in your life. The organisers of the event were brilliant, and as always the 3 tracks of talks were varied and very interesting. Looking forward to next year already.

CyberSecurity professionals.

Securi-Tay has been an amazing experience for me. This was the first in-person conference that I attended and spoke at. The diversity of attendees at this conference allowed me to network with other students and cyber-security professionals. I had been quite nervous about how my talk would be received and obviously, I was stressing out about stage fright getting the best of me, however, the number of questions received from the audience after the talk and also through direct messages on social media was astounding.

Apart from getting questions from people genuinely interested in Microsoft products, I have also been approached by people who similarly to me are going through a career change, and have found it very encouraging to see a Graduate Apprentice talk about their experience and journey. I am looking forward to attending future Securi-Tay conferences.

Donnan Mallon, Cyber Security Analyst

The Securi-Tay conference was a fantastic experience, highlights were getting to meet new people from different industry backgrounds and the atmosphere of the conference itself.

I enjoyed talks such as Practising Safe Sex(t) by Tia Cotton, talks from my fellow colleagues Elizabeth Momola – Microsoft Azure Sentinel, Mark Rose – Hacking 9 to 5 and A brief overview of video game anti-cheat by Fraser and so on. I’ll be attending the conference again next year!

Securi-Tay 2022 – Great experience meeting fellow professionals and students to discuss what makes them passionate about security and talk discuss common interests. Having attended multiple before, it lived up to the expectation of a well run, friendly conference for all levels. Despite attending multiple other Securi-Tays, it was my first time on the other side of the talks as it was my first time giving a presentation. The volunteers and everyone involved did a great job making sure that it ran smoothly.

Attending SecuriTayX has made Quorum Cyber even more excited to have launched our brand-new graduate programme – the standard of emerging talent is astounding and we can’t wait to offer individuals a place on our programme.

At Quorum Cyber we are offering a full cyber experience, gaining knowledge and understanding across all of our teams and services. From monitoring threats in our SOC team to respond to an incident with our Incident Response team, you’ll come away with tonnes of industry knowledge and accreditations.
